I’ve never read something like None of the Above before.
I’ve heard about hermaphrodites, but the concept “intersex” was unknown to me. For me, this book is more than the story of Kristin. I believe this book is out there to teach people that are uninformed like me about the full scope of intersex.
I did enjoyed this book. I gave it 3 stars because it was a book that I enjoyed, but I didn’t loved it. Like I said, it’s a good book to inform ignorant people that use that concept the wrong way or for those who have no idea about intersex.
I found interesting how there are different support groups for people like her. I thinks that’s something so necessary nowadays because when you’re feeling different and alone, there’s always someone or groups that feel the same and go through the same things like you, therefore, you won’t feel alone anymore.
“That was when I realized that life was a multiple-choice test with two answers: Male and Female, And I was None Of The Above.”
I can’t say if Kristin’s reaction when she found out about intersex was right or wrong because I can’t even imagine how I would react if I was in her place. I do believe that’s how friends would react. Important people left her alone just because of her diagnostic. She’s a girl, she feels like a girl, but everybody else thought she was a boy. The bullying was horrible, and I hated reading that part. It made me want to punch every single person that commented on the horrible posts about her. The characters in this book are so realistic, and that is something you don’t see in every book out there.
If there was a thing I didn’t like was the romance. I think it was forced, and I feel it was portrayed as “if someone falls in love with you, you can feel normal and okay again” which is BS.
I do recommend this book to everyone out there. Especially to those who don’t know and don’t understand the full scope of intersex. I’m not saying you will know EVERYTHING about intersex, but I can say it will help you to understand it a little bit better. At least, it help me and now I feel more interested in the topic. I know I’m going to do some research to read more about it.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and loved the narrator. Highly, highly recommend it.
